Las Vegas, Nevada (November 16, 2016) - The Lucas Oil Modified Series presented by LoanMart will wave the checkered flag on its record-setting season by adding a few more firsts to the book Saturday night (November 19).
The 51FIFTY Energy Drink Race of Champions presented by Optima Batteries will be the longest race in series history – 101 laps around the fast, banked 3/8–mile oval at The Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
It will be the 12th race in a season that began in late February and has produced a record eight different race winners and four points lead canges and it promises to be one of the most interesting events of the year as 30 drivers chase victory and a $4,000 prize.
There are no points at stake. The 10-race championship season concluded October 29 at Lake Havasu City, Arizona, where Matthew Hicks won the Hoosier Tire West points title and Travis Thirkettle claimed DJ Safety Rookie of the Year honors, and with the standings determined some of the series regulars have decided to sit out the finale.
One who hasn't is Taylor Miinch, who won this event last year and finished sixth when the series visited The Bullring in late May. Miinch also won the 100-lap series finale at Lake Havasu City three weeks ago and is one of the favorites in a field that will include 2016 race winners Thirkettle, Ryan Partridge, Kyle Tellstrom, Scott Winters and Dylan Cappello, the 2014 champion.
The potential spoiler is 2009 champion Andrew Phipps. The Simi Valley, California, resident will be making his first series start since finishing 12th at Madera, California, on July 16, 2011, but he'll be at the wheel of the car Linny White drove to two victories this season.
The early entry list also includes a record three women – Bullring champion Kayli Barker, Caitlin Stroebel of Meridian, Idaho, and Sierra Furia, a 19-year-old from Lakeport, California, who finished seventh in this year's North State Modified Series.
Champion Darrin Knight and runner-up Charlie Collins also are among the five North State drivers on the entry list. Mark Ith Jr., who won the Maverik Modified title at Rocky Mountain Raceways, heads the Utah contingent and Caitlin Stroebel is part of an Idaho trio that includes her father, Shelby Stroebel, and Trevor Cristiani of Boise.
Furia, Cristiani and Joe Rhodes Jr. of Sacramento, California, will be making their debuts in the Lucas Oil Modified Series.
The 51FIFTY Energy Drink Race of Champions is part of The Bullring's West Coast Short Track Championships, which will be streamed live beginning at 5 p.m. PST (8 p.m. EST) on Lucas Oil Racing TV ( www.LucasOilRacing.TV ), the first on-demand subscription network featuring motor sports 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
The Lucas Oil Modified main event shares the schedule with the SPEARS SRL Southwest Tour and Race Car Factory Spec Late Models.
The Race of Champions is scheduled to get under way after Opening Ceremonies at 5 p.m. and will be run in two segments – an opening 51 laps and a final 50. The two segments will be separated by a 30-lap main event for the Race Car Factory Spec Late Models. While that race is being run the Modified teams will be making their pit stops to refuel, fine-tune their chassis and make minor repairs. No tire changes will be allowed, however, and the drivers must start the final segment on the same tires they were using when the opening segment ended.
The SRL Southwest Tour will bring the program to a close with its 150-lap main event.
